West Cork Maritime Release Rum Cask

In 2003, Denis McCarthy, Ger McCarthy, and John O’Connell established West Cork Distillers in Skibbereen, despite the economic odds being against them. Drawing from their families’ distilling knowledge, the food developer and the two fishermen took a leap of faith, and today West Cork Distillers stands as Ireland’s largest distillery entirely owned by Irish nationals. Their “Maritime Release” special edition pays homage to the founders’ background with four variants of single malt Irish whiskey. The bottles are hand-blown, inspired by the floating glass spheres that once gave buoyancy to fishing nets, and feature a side spout for a smoother pour.

One of the intriguing expressions in this collection is the West Cork Maritime Release Rum Cask Single Malt Irish Whiskey. It is aged in first-fill bourbon casks and finished in Consorcio Licorero Nacional rum casks from Venezuela. This rum cask finish imparts the whiskey with a delightful range of fruit and roasting notes. Bottled at an optimal 46% alcohol content, this whiskey is neither chill-filtered nor colored, and when savored at the ideal drinking strength, it reveals a tapestry of diverse aromas and flavors, enriched by the distinctive finish in Venezuelan rum casks.
