Built in the mid 19th century, D.W.D is of the “big six” distilleries of Dublin. Around 80% of the world’s whiskey comes from Dublin during this period, with DWD’s Jones Road Distillery producing 3 million LPA a year.
The turn of the 20th century sees the Irish whiskey economy brought to its knees. DWD partners with neighbouring powerhouses George Roe and William Jameson. Despite this, all cease operations by the end of WWII.
The only memory of DWD lives on in the many bar mirrors that adorn Dublin establishments. Reminiscent of the dominance of the brand, and the category as a whole.
This heritage inspires a group of friends to embark on a mission to revive this once revered spirit. Sitting in The Palace Bar, Dublin, they devise a plan to bring “Dublin’s Own” whiskey back to life. After a collaborative effort from Ireland’s major master distillers, 117 iterations are created. One is chosen. The result is an outstanding blend of single malt and grain whiskeys. Consisting of both double and triple distilled whiskeys, this is a rare chance to experience a blend from Ireland’s most revered contemporary distilleries.
The whiskeys are aged between five and ten years in ex-Bourbon American Oak.
Nose
Warm and inviting as a veil of alluring aromas uncover a treasure chest of enticing nuances – soft chewy caramel, brioche dipped in honey, Madagascar vanilla pod, and sun-kissed raisins. Scents of toffee, apple, and citrus take over, moist lemon drizzle cake and succulent sultanas arouse the senses. A whisper of candy floss and a prickle of sherbet freshness completes this tapestry of temptation.
Taste
Hedonistic and heart-warming as this noble spirit enriches the palate with an avalanche of rewarding flavours; creamy white chocolate, caffè latte, crème brûlée, and Doyenne pear. By holding this aged whiskey long in the mouth the warmth of the tongue helps to reveal another fusion of refinement soft licorice, overripe pineapple, marzipan, and roasted cashews.
